IBM donated a significant fraction of the computers used in data collection at each site. Ongoing operational expenses of the project are provided by the National Science Foundation.

The California High School Cosmic Ray Observatory, common recognised as CHICOS(California HIgh school Cosmic ray ObServatory), operated by the Kellogg Laboratory sited at the California Institute of Technology, south of Pasadena, California, USA, is one of the the world's largest ongoing Cosmic Rays observatory program. It is known for it's large network within the Los Angeles County area, based mainly on the connected high school sites that carry the Cosmic Ray detector units, also some associated middle schools.
