Dinosaurs, children’s adventures, horror fantasies … stop-motion cinema has done them all. Now it’s being celebrated as a pivotal part of movie history
It all started – or stop-started, perhaps – with some tiny pterodactyls. As 1924 drew to a close, Marcel Delgado was putting the finishing touches to 50 model dinosaurs. For months, the sculptor had been meticulously constructing a range of Tyrannosaurus rexes, brontosauruses and pterodactyls. Now he was getting ready to pass them on to pioneering animator Willis O’Brien, who would painstakingly move each creature an almost imperceptible amount, shoot another frame, and then repeat the process.
A year later, The Lost World – the first ever feature film using what was termed “stop-motion” – was released, transforming Arthur Conan Doyle’s novel of the same name into an action-packed spectacle. Audiences were astounded, even dumbfounded by its seemingly supernatural special effects.

Shekhar Home dedicated each episode to adapting a version of Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories about Sherlock Holmes while hinting at the existence of a final villain, i.e., M. At the end of the fourth episode, M showed up at Shekhar’s doorstep. The fifth episode was centered around unraveling the connection between Shekhar and M. It was revealed that Shekhar’s actual name was Snehashish Haldar, and he used to be a teacher at the Calcutta Medical College. That’s when he was roped into a secret government mission by Mrinmoy where he had to look into the mysterious deaths of three scientists. After deducing the methods by which they were killed, Snehashish was taken to the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Defense Research (Iocdr), which was where he met Dr. Shanti. She gave him some valuable inputs regarding the dead scientists’ alleged involvement in the making of a dangerous chemical weapon.

Sherlock Holmes has been adapted in so many ways that there’s no point in partaking in any kind of pearl clutching activities anymore. Of course, the adaptations featuring Basil Rathbone, Peter Cushing, Jeremy Brett, Michael Caine, Robert Downey Jr., Ian McKellen, Benedict Cumberbatch, and even Jonny Lee Miller will be celebrated by fans of Arthur Conan Doyle’s work. But they also have to deal with the likes of Holmes & Watson, Enola Holmes, Sherlock Gnomes, and Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd century. And you’d think that after a show with a female Sherlock Holmes, a play in which Sherlock and Watson are in a gay relationship, and an animated series by Hayao Miyazaki where the characters are anthropomorphic animals, there’s no way that a new adaptation can surprise you. Well, Shekhar Home asks you to think otherwise.

The mystery surrounding the absence of new episodes of BBC’s hit series “Sherlock” has finally been solved, and it’s not due to a lack of interest from its creators. In a recent interview with The Metro (UK), series co-creator Steven Moffat revealed that the primary obstacle to reviving the beloved detective drama is the busy schedules of its stars, Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman.
“As I’ve said before, I’ll do it tomorrow… I’m easy,” Moffat stated, expressing his eagerness to continue the series. “You need to get the two big stars. That’s the problem.”
It’s been over seven years since the last episode, “The Final Problem,” aired in 2017. Since then, both Cumberbatch and Freeman have become Hollywood mainstays, with significant roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and other high-profile projects.
Moffat emphasized that the format of Sherlock Holmes stories is far from exhausted.

For how hectic it was in the last two seasons, BBC’s Sherlock had an amazing run, amassing millions of fans around the globe — and not just any fans but those willing to wait for two years every time just to get three episodes in return. That’s some serious dedication, and deserved one, too: BBC genuinely revived the classic story, and suddenly, everyone wanted to make their own spin on Holmes and Watson.
Sherlock BBC ended its run seven years ago, in 2017 — but admittedly, it could return! There’s just a slight catch.
Everyone Wants Sherlock Back, but It’s Hard
As much as Sherlock fans would do anything to get their favorite show back, its creators and key players would also love to see it revived. Recently, Sherlock co-creator Steven Moffat sat down with Metro UK and spoke about the iconic series’ potential return, pointing out that there...

Edgar Allan Poe's C. Auguste Dupin in 1841's "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" is the first fictional detective to appear in literature, but Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes is hands down the most well-known detective in all of pop culture.
Identifying himself as a "consulting" detective, Sherlock Holmes is intelligent beyond all reason, analytical to a fault, and emotionally distant due to his obsessions with logic. But when he's hot on the case in an investigation, his flair for the dramatics kicks in and he lives to show off his findings. Not because he wants to be the center of attention, but because he must let everyone know just how brilliant he is for cracking the case. He's also a morally questionable individual, who has no problems lying to law enforcement or committing petty crimes of his own if it means getting one step closer to solving the mystery.

From Pinocchio’s Revenge to Silent Night, Deadly Night, taking beloved cultural icons and turning them into cold-blooded killers is nothing new in horror. I mean, corrupting traditionally innocent iconography is pretty much the genre’s specialty, but I still find it fascinating how modern filmmakers are fighting back against franchise monopolies by re-imagining popular figures like Winnie the Pooh and Mickey Mouse as murderous monsters as soon as they enter the public domain.
And with the announcement that the Winnie the Pooh: Blood & Honey team’s “Twisted Childhood Universe” is expanding to include evil versions of characters like Bambi and Peter Pan, I think it’s time that filmmakers start looking at some less obvious source material when coming up with their public domain scares. With that in mind, we’ve decided to highlight six public domain characters that also deserve their own horror movies. After all, if these...

In a sign of Folivari’s widening ambitions, the French animation powerhouse will handle world sales of the Sherlock Holmes spinoff “The Baker Street Four” through its newly launched distribution branch Folivari International.
Adapted from a local comic book series that pairs Arthur Conan Doyle’s great detective with four streetwise urchins, the title was developed in-house, with Folivari and Blue Spirit (“Blue Eye Samurai”) tackling creative duties and Canal+ set as commissioning broadcaster.
Headed by Melissa Vega – former acquisitions and international sales manager at Dandelooo – Folivari International has picked up three additional titles, among them Folivari originals “Nino Dino” and “Kiki & Ailen” and the Chilean/Brazilian preschool series “Guitar & Drum,” co-produced by Hype Animation and Punkrobot.
That Vega and Folivari founding partner Damien Brunner both share Franco-Spanish backgrounds lends the upstart distributor a desire to look for projects from further afield.

There's nothing quite as exciting as a good detective, even if you already know the mystery of the case. Even though there are many TV shows and movies that deal with original stories and even true crime cases, there are still some classics that viewers get attached to and jump at every adaptation.
Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes series, as well as the entire arsenal of Agatha Christie novels, are some of the most popular examples. And just like the directors continue to be interested in adapting these characters, the viewers continue to watch them. Even actors, already known for one of them, don’t mind jumping onto another.
Agatha Christie’s The Seven Dials Mystery Netflix Series
The three-part story, reimagined by Broadchurch creator and Doctor Who showrunner Chris Chibnall, is set in 1925 England, where a lavish party goes horribly wrong and the prank turns into a very real murder.

The three-part story, reimagined by Broadchurch creator and Doctor Who showrunner Chris Chibnall, is set in 1925 England, where a lavish party goes horribly wrong and the prank turns into a very real murder.

As heartbroken as So Help Me Todd fans might be right now, they may find a silver lining in some recent news concerning one of the show’s cast members.
Following the series’ definite cancellation that couldn’t be prevented even by fans’ grand online campaign that had been calling out CBS for weeks, So Help Me Todd’s Inga Schlingmann, who portrayed the leading character’s ex-girlfriend Susan on the ditched show, has landed a big role in Watson, CBS’ upcoming series described as a medical drama with detective elements.
Watson initially came around at the expense of the network’s other successful shows, including So Help Me Todd, as CBS needed to make room in its tight schedule for the new arrivals.

The detective story has seen lots of diverse approaches over the years. Ever since authors such as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle or Raymond Chandler have perfected the formula, it seems as if new stories aim to bend the rules, while also maintaining the view on the world and its society, which has always been one of the most interesting parts of the genre. Consequently, as the concept of truth becomes more fragmented and even chaotic in modern times, these stories reflect this development. Atsuro Shimoyashiro's second feature “Lonesome Vacation” relies heavily on the conventions of the genre, while bending them at the same time, telling a quite meaningful tale about the significance of proof and the truth for a person's life and identity.

While Robert Downey Jr.’s journey as the sardonic industrialist-turned-superhero may have come to a lamentable end, not all hope is lost. At least not for the astute London-based detective renowned for his logical prowess and brilliant skills.

That’s right, Downey Jr. may very well make a comeback as the world-famous detective, and his wife, Susan Downey Jr. most certainly has her fingers crossed for it.
Will Robert Downey Jr. Return As the Ingenious Detective?
Much like Iron Man – a character that continues to live in fans’ hearts to this very date – Arthur Conan Doyle’s eminent creation of Sherlock Holmes is inarguably one of a kind. And when someone as gifted as Robert Downey Jr. takes on the character, well, that’s one surefire way to leave an indelible mark on the audience.

Every time a popular franchise is revived, people tend to wonder if it was ever necessary. In the world of crime dramas, there's no source more popular than Agatha Christie's novels or Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes. No matter how many times these stories have been told, every producer and director wants to put their own spin on them.
Guy Ritchie tried his hand at Sherlock Holmes in 2009 and 2011, releasing two films, Sherlock Holmes and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, starring Robert Downey Jr. Both movies got decent reviews and a lot of happy viewers, but that wasn't enough. Now Ritchie is back with another project and another Sherlock.
Who Will Be the New Sherlock Holmes?
While the world is still wondering who will be lucky enough to play James Bond, it's not the burning question we should be asking. After the success of Robert Downey Jr.

Hayao Miyazaki is considered one of the best animators of all time, and his work with Studio Ghibli includes some of the most beloved and acclaimed animated films in the history of the medium. The animator has helped change anime and animation so much that he refuses to permanently retire, choosing instead to deliver masterpiece after masterpiece and exploring different genres and tones, all while remaining true to his trademark themes and characters — determined heroines, magical realism, and anti-war messages. Miyazaki seems determined to continue working even if it means threatening the future of his studio after he's gone because he's yet to pick a successor.
While many people are familiar with Miyazaki's output with Studio Ghibli, not many know about his work prior to co-founding the studio with Isao Takahata and Toshio Suzuki. And yet, it is in that pre-Ghibli era that we find hints of the maestro that Miyazaki would become,...

14 years ago, we were all shocked by the new take on Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes detective stories. Created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, it presented the new vision of our favorite detective and modernized the whole story of his exploits.
Just a year before that the world saw Guy Ritchie’s adaptation, set in the 1890s just like the canon, yet offered a more dynamic narration with lots of action sequences. This movie was received not as positively as the series that aired from 2010 to 2017, however, Reddit’s recent discussion concludes that Ritchie’s version holds up significantly better.
It was Redditor @saylorthrift who started this debate, and their hot takes surprisingly gained large support. Overall, it is stated that the 2009 movie has aged better than Moffat and Gatiss’ show because of its cast, setting, atmosphere, as well as screenplay.

Deadline reports that Hero Fiennes Tiffin of the After film series has signed on to star in the Young Sherlock series that has been ordered by Prime Video – and to clear up any possible confusion before it can arise: no, this is not a series reboot or continuation of the 1985 film Young Sherlock Holmes, which came to us from director Barry Levinson, screenwriter Chris Columbus, and producer Steven Spielberg. Rather, this is an adaptation of the Young Sherlock series of novels that author Andrew Lane started writing in 2010. That series was a response to the success Charlie Higson was having with his series of Young James Bond novels. Guy Ritchie is on board to direct and executive produce all eight episodes of Young Sherlock‘s first season. Ritchie, of course, has prior Sherlock Holmes experience, having directed Robert Downey Jr. as the iconic character in the 2009 film Sherlock Holmes and...

Amazon Prime Video has ordered a series based on Andy Lane’s “Young Sherlock Holmes” novels with Hero Fiennes Tiffin set for the lead role, Variety has learned.
Guy Ritchie is attached to direct and executive produce the eight-episode series. It will be a reunion for Ritchie and Tiffin, who recently worked together on the feature “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.” It is also the latest Sherlock Holmes project for Ritchie, as he previously directed two films about the famous detective starring Robert Downey Jr. as Holmes, Jude Law as Dr. Watson, and Rachel McAdams as Irene Adler.
“In ‘Young Sherlock’ we’re going to see an exhilarating new version of the detective everyone thinks they know in a way they’ve never imagined before,” said Ritchie. “We’re going to crack open this enigmatic character, find out what makes him tick, and learn how he becomes the genius we all love.

As far as individual authors go, Stephen King is certainly in the top of the list of authors whose works have been adapted. He is right there with Agatha Christie, Edgar Allan Poe, Arthur Conan Doyle, and other authors whose works have been adapted often and in many forms. But unlike the aforementioned authors, King’s adaptations are usually original, while the other authors have seen their works adapted and remade more than once. In light of that fact, we can confirm that King’s story, “The Monkey,” had been adapted into a film this spring and the movie was presented to buyers at Cannes this year!
Knowing how popular King’s adaptations are, it was a sure thing that someone would buy the movie, and as it happens, Neon managed to nab the distribution rights for the upcoming movie and they have confirmed that a 2025 release date is currently planned.

Eminem was known for oddball, controversial stunts during his early career, but he’s taken things to another level with an obituary for his character Slim Shady. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom holds a strange place in every Indiana Jones fan’s heart. The awkward middle child, Temple of Doom is a dark, problematic prequel to Raiders of the Lost Ark, one which takes the series in a weirder, wilder direction—and manages to pull off one of the greatest openings of any action movie ever.
Today there’s often an assumption that contemporary critics weren’t enamored by director Steven Spielberg and writer George Lucas’ second collaboration, but that’s slightly misleading; The New Yorker’s Pauline Kael preferred Temple to Raiders because it fully embraced being “preposterous” and “implausible,” though she also writes that her friends labeled it “heartless” and “overbearing.” Meanwhile Roger Ebert gave the film a perfect four stars while People magazine warned that children may be traumatized by it.

Steven Spielberg's filmmaking techniques took a large bound forward in 2001 with the release of "A.I. Artificial Intelligence." The sci-fi film, set in a near future populated by conscious androids, was a project Spielberg took over from an ailing Stanley Kubrick, who passed on it when he felt Spielberg could do it better. In "A.I.," Spielberg's photography and editing were very different from the slick, adventure films and glossy prestige pictures he had become popular making. Now everything was hazy, staid, more deliberate.
Although he had already won three Oscars (two for "Schindler's List" and one for "Saving Private Ryan") and was widely considered to be a reigning master of Hollywood's blockbuster class, Spielberg evolved. After 2001, Spielberg's career bifurcated into dispassionate effects-based thrillers wherein the filmmaker was merely experimenting, and deeply passionate political thrillers that used the politics of the past to reflect on issues of the day.

Whether you like it or not, Sherlock Holmes is the man “who never lived and will never die.” Ever since being created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in 1887, the iconic detective has been ever-present in popular culture: for 137 years, Sherlock Holmes has been investigating mind-boggling cases, uncovering conspiracies, and catching criminals. And he’s not stopping any time soon, we’ll tell you that much!

It has been more than 15 years since Guy Ritchie released his Sherlock Holmes offering with Robert Downey Jr. in the lead role. A lot has changed in the film industry since then, with the 59-year-old becoming a mega star thanks to his pivotal involvement in the MCU.
Now that Downey Jr. has hung up his Iron Man suit, he is interested in making a third offering in the Sherlock Holmes film series. This is reportedly in the pipeline, but it hasn’t been confirmed yet. It has been announced that there will be at least one spinoff series, though, which could be set to reinvigorate the franchise.
Detective Remains at Forefront of Popular Culture
There are rumours that there will be two spinoff series, which are due to be released on HBO Max. This could be a clever move from the streaming service, as the Sherlock Holmes brand is massive in popular culture.

More and more pop culture figures are slipping into the public domain, allowing anyone to reinterpret beloved characters. In 2022, Winnie-The-Pooh entered the public domain, and our cherished childhood friend was made into a vicious slasher villain at the center of a humorless bloodbath of a film, "Winnie-The-Pooh: Blood And Honey." Meanwhile, Disney has so far managed to successfully prevent Mickey Mouse from entering the public domain despite the copyright partially expiring, while Superman and other iconic superheroes move closer and closer to becoming public IP.
In the case of another prominent pop culture figure, Sherlock Holmes, many of the stories featuring Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's famous detective entered the public domain some time ago. Copyright typically lasts for the duration of an author's life plus 70 years, 120 years from the date of their creation, or 95 years from their publication date — whichever comes soonest.
