Description
Français : Trois des géométries de rhéomètre à rotation les plus courantes (de gauche à droite) :
  • (1) à cylindres coaxiaux ; adapté pour essais sur liquides peu visqueux (dispositif sensible car grande surface de contact) ; taux de cisaillement faible car entrefer élevé ; inertie élevée ;
  • (2) plan-plan ; entrefer modifiable ; gradient de vitesse vertical non constant dans l'entrefer ; volume d'échantillon faible ;
  • (3) cône-plan ; angle du cône très faible (0,5 ≤ θ ≤ 4°) ; gradient de vitesse vertical quasi constant car la hauteur et la vitesse tangentielle augmentent linéairement avec la distance à l'axe de rotation ; entrefer fixe ; volume d'échantillon très faible, compris entre 0,5 et 2 ml.

La partie mobile est en rouge orangé, le fluide en bleu clair et la partie fixe en bleu foncé.
Essais en rotation pour (1) (pas de mode oscillation car inertie mécanique élevée du rotor) ; essais en rotation ou en oscillation pour (2) et (3).

Le mode oscillation permet d'accéder aux grandeurs viscoélastiques intrinsèques (viscosité complexe η*, module de cisaillement complexe G*, complaisance complexe J* (= 1 / G*) et angle de phase δ) et aux transitions du matériau (Tg...). Voir aussi Viscoanalyseur.
