It is known that during the Fernando de Arguello administration a conspiracy directed by the Jemez Pueblo was hatched and Arguello was warned of a possible joint revolt of the Jemez and Apache peoples. Later, in 4 May 1647, for some reason, Carvajal, still being Governor of New Mexico, was sent out to Mexico City as a prisoner. However, when he was being dispatched to this city, Arguello fled to somewhere near Parral (in Chihuahua, modern Mexico). All the properties he had were dissipated and destroyed and the Spanish Crown sent another military force to Santa Fe from Mexico City to replace him as governor of the then province.
