On September 15, 2024, Secret Service agents shot at a man hiding in shrubs while carrying a rifle at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida; the man fled the scene and was later captured. The incident occurred while Donald Trump, a former president of the United States, was golfing at the club. Officials believe that the man intended to target Trump.[1] The Federal Bureau of Investigation is investigating the incident as an attempted assassination.[3] No injuries were reported.
Background
The Trump International Golf Club has been noted as a potential target for attempts on former president Donald Trump's life.[4] The shooting occurred 64 days after a previous assassination attempt on Trump, during which Trump was shot in his right ear, in the midst of the 2024 United States presidential election campaign season.[5]
Shooting
The incident occurred at 1:30 p.m. EDT,[6] while Donald Trump was golfing at the club between holes 5 and 6.[7] A man was seen with an AK-47-style rifle on the golf course by Secret Service agents. The man was hiding in a shrub 400 to 500 yards away from Trump.[8] The agents shot at the man, who dropped his weapon and fled, getting into a car. Whether the man shot at agents is not known.[6] A witness saw the suspect enter his vehicle, and took a photo of it, helping authorities find it.[9] The club's golf course was locked down shortly after.[10] No injuries were reported.[11][12]
An AK-47-style rifle with a scope, ceramic tiles, two backpacks, and a GoPro camera were recovered from the scene.[6]
Investigation
A person of interest was detained while he was driving a vehicle, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office.[13][14] He was driving from Palm Beach County to Martin County northbound on Interstate 95.[14] The sheriff's units "waited a while" to stop the car because they did not want to engage in a high-speed chase. His car was contained by the sheriff's units, who forced him off the road and took him out of the car at gunpoint.[15] The man was unarmed at the time of his arrest.[16] Federal investigators are at Mile Marker 110, where the highway is shut down.[14]
The United States Secret Service, Federal Bureau of Investigation (leading) and the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office are investigating the shooting.[7][6] The FBI is investigating the incident as an attempted assassination.[3] The suspect's intent is unknown,[14] though officials believe he intended to shoot Trump.[1]
Responses
President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were briefed on the incident.[11] The White House said in a statement: "The president and vice president have been briefed about the security incident at the Trump International Golf Course, where former President Trump was golfing. They are relieved to know that he is safe."[14] In a statement, Harris said "I have been briefed on reports of gunshots fired near former President Trump and his property in Florida, and I am glad he is safe. Violence has no place in America."[17]
