I have a feel the Java ecosystem might be overtaking this change and rendering it obsolete with virtual threads. With most major databases now implementing loom support, I expect the need for non-blocking I/O at this level will disappear.

I therefore plan to take the best ideas from this (e.g. test and package restructuring) and re-implement it without the non-blocking complexity.
