Browser'2024 The main application of a modern computer is a web browser. Many people probably don’t launch anything else in a week. And this application is also very convenient to monetize: I agreed with Google that it will be the default search engine - so they pay for it. You don’t need to think about money anymore, just make a good product so that people will use it. And browsers are also stagnant. Chrome is the undisputed leader, he doesn’t need to progress, so he’s not progressing. An ideal market for a startup! American #startupoftheday Arc is an attempt to make a new browser, to occupy a niche, if not Chrome, then at least Firefox. 2-3% of a pie of this size is already a success and a billion-dollar company. However, Arc is still very, very far from reaching these numbers, and the main question on the way to them is why the user should choose this particular browser, why is it better than others. I didn't find an answer on the Internet. The startup itself writes standard general words on the landing page. Reviews on Reddit highlight minor interface details. Someone writes “the main thing is that this is not Google” - I believe that this is really important for the author, but this will definitely not be the basis for the popularity of the product. Below is my own hypothesis after briefly testing the product. The modern browser interface was formed a long time ago in the days of small monitors and 1024x768 resolution. Applications then saved space on the monitor to leave more room for content. The ideal browser is the absence of a browser, so pixels are consumed to a minimum. Now there are more pixels, especially horizontally, and the paradigm can be changed. Arc gives up part of the screen for its features - advanced tab management, mail integration, and the like. Probably, all this can be hidden, but the default state of the window is very expanded, the contrast with traditional competitors is striking. And if people really no longer need the space for the web pages themselves, then coming up with something useful to occupy it with is a relatively simple matter. But Chrome will not be able to repeat this approach. Like any big product, its audience is conservative, and redesigns are always met with hostility. However, I repeat, these are all my fabrications, and not official positioning. Arc doesn't say all this, it's just better than Chrome because its developers didn't figure out how to properly manage tabs. I put together an open list of official and unofficial LLM-based chatbots related to Swiss government agencies. The hype may have calmed down a little; nevertheless, more and more are and will be popping up in the near future. We need to make some laws around AI. The first one should be a liability law. The people who programmed the machine are liable for its actions. We have laws like this already for weapons, cars, and pets. AI should at least have this level of responsibility for its programmers. #AI. Otherwise it will be way too easy to blame the machine which someone programmed. #iRobot is here.

Grok 2 generates images with almost no censorship Yesterday, Elon Musk's xAI company presented a beta version of the Grok-2 neural network, and today it became known that the Flux image generator built into Grok is almost free of censorship. Flux was developed by the German startup Black Forest Labs. It was launched by the same team that created the Stable Diffusion neural network. The startup has raised $31 million in investments. It aims to make its image generation models open and widely available. FLUX is the company's flagship product. 👮‍♂️ The absence of censorship is a conscious choice. Musk's decision to collaborate with Black Forest Labs is likely due to the lack of restrictions in their AI models. Musk has previously said that safeguards can make models less safe, and he believes it is important to train AI to avoid excessive political correctness. Grok-2 can now create images that would be impossible with Google's Gemini or OpenAI's DALL-E.

Looking to grow a successful SaaS? Don't build it for web developers (unless maybe you're building a WP plugin). Solana is not releasing a new product to expand web3 or otherwise contributing to "mass adoption" of web3. They are not "bringing crypto to the people" as their slick website suggests. If that were the case they would be releasing an open-source blockchain protocol. Instead, they are releasing a branded product to expand Solana called SOLANA ACTIONS. Their website clearly states, "It’s time to connect Solana to the entire Internet." Nowhere in their marketing is web3 mentioned without being attached to Solana. It is all about Solana's version of web3. It would be like saying, "Facebook was designed to expand the internet." No, Facebook is a brand that lives on the internet and captures value from the www layer of it. Don't get branding and web3 confused. The truth is, there are countless definitions of web3, and this is Solana's version, which their customers will use to accomplish tasks and capture value.

Here's how synthetic Facebook Click Identifiers work on Shopify (in the best of situations, when not artificially juiced - which is a whole other topic...): When someone visits your website from a Facebook ad that has a `fbclid` parameter in the URL, an attribution app can stuff that fbclid in a database, along with one or more Shopify cookies. When Shopify sets its own cookies, they are iOS 17 compliant, and can persist for up to 12 months (the full expiry value that's set on the cookie). Then, anytime that someone who's identified by this Shopify cookie comes back to your site, the attribution app can append the fbclid that they stored in their database to these events, matching on the Shopify cookie. In theory, this is pretty cool. But it's also highly problematic. If the shopper saw 1 or more additional ads after the initial click that had the fbclid, their purchase event will be attributed to the original click exclusively, with no credit going to the subsequent ad views. Lots can go wrong with this approach, and it assumes that Facebook's own attribution algorithms and ID graph matching is worst than what a third-party can build, which is just not a thing. I've said it before: There is no magic to this stuff. CAPIs are designed for you to collect the best "deterministic" data that you can about your shoppers, so that Facebook can do its thing. It takes hard work, troubleshooting, proactive monitoring - and zero secret sauce.

New Progress with #AgentWordLift and GraphRAG 🕸 Following Atanas Kiryakov definitions for #GraphRAG we're enhancing our system's ability to understand a website's organic performance by mapping natural language questions to graph queries, executing these queries, and summarizing the results with an LLM. Here's what we're currently working on: 𝐃𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: We've integrated Google Search Console data into our Knowledge Graph, enriching its analytics capabilities. 𝐐𝐮𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: We are refining our process to convert natural language queries into GraphQL, which remains a work in progress, aimed at enhancing our data retrieval processes. As we delve deeper into schema-less GraphQL, we encounter both challenges and opportunities. Its flexibility is amazing, yet it demands sophisticated handling to optimize for LLMs through both in-context learning and fine-tuning.

"I hate WordPress." "Webflow is crap, it doesn't scale." "Had a terrible experience with Contentful." These are example sentences I've heard multiple times over the past 10 years while speaking with potential Pixelmatters clients. Everyone has different experiences and perspectives on the multiple CMSs they use(d). I always say the same thing: a CMS is a tool, so we can compare it to... a knife. 🔪 I may use a knife to kill someone, OR I may use a knife to cut food to prepare a delicious meal. The exact same thing applies to a CMS. There are no good or bad CMSs, just the more appropriate one to YOUR specific needs. On top of that, there's good and bad implementation. That's all. Woo, it’s time for part 2 of ‘Why LLMs are kinda dumb!’ → How responses are generated So, what happens when a LLM generates a response? A whole lot, but let me simplify it a bit. An LLM looks at the text written up until that point and decides which token to choose. Based on everything it’s learned about language, it calculates which tokens are most likely to follow the current text. Look at the image below, it calculated a 43.06% chance of “couldn”, 23.48% chance of “don”, etc. Because those are the most realistic continuations of the sentence up until that point. It chooses the option with the highest probability, and then it does the entire process all over again. ✅ Read everything ✅ Calculate next token probabilities ✅ Select highest ✅ Read everything etc. And it’ll just continue doing that until it generates a complete response. And then you magically end up with a sensible response. So, in a sense, it’s just a very fancy autocomplete. Want to know more about ‘Why LLMs are kinda dumb’?
