A device was an object invented for a particular purpose. Although not a machine, a device could be a machine component performing a task.
In 2266, James T. Kirk asked Spock if an alien cube was a vessel, to which the answer was some type of device. Later, Kirk described the fictional corbomite as a device to Balok. (TOS: "The Corbomite Maneuver")
