Jaylah and her family had crash-landed on the planet Altamid prior to 2263, and were captured by Krall. Her family died, including her father, who fought Manas after he caught them attempting to escape. Later, she was taunted and told she would die as her father had. (Star Trek Beyond)

Star Trek: Boldly Go, issue 5 revealed that her family consisted of her father (β), her mother (β), who died of illness when Jaylah was a child, and an older sister, Keelah (β), who was drained by Krall prior to their father's death.
