The title of Healer is an honoured and respected role within Vulcan society.
It was used to describe those members who are skilled in the arts of healing. Whether it applies to a sentient individual or even an animal. These practicers of medicine were the equivalent of Doctors. (TAS episode: "Yesteryear") They were noted as being the most formal and controlled of all Vulcans. This was because they had to be as they had the strongest ESP and had to deal with sick minds as well as sick bodies. A circle of healers were also used to seek the truth of a matter from a persons mind in a process known as Verification. (TOS novel: The Vulcan Academy Murders)
As a young woman Selar found that she was not a very strong telepath, and as a result she became a physician instead of training to become a healer. (TNG novel: Metamorphosis)
In 2371, Healer Senva was nominated for the Carrington Award. (DS9 episode: "Prophet Motive")
- It should be noted that, while the Vulcans primarily use this term to describe this profession, other races such as Human have been known to describe practitioners of alternative medicine in this fashion. (TNG episode: "Sub Rosa")
- Furthermore, in the ENT episode: "Stigma" the Vulcan medical personnel are referred to as doctors. This is possibly done so to avoid confusion among other races or perhaps that the field of 'doctor' and 'healer' are two different fields.
