Anthony Birley

British archaeologist (1937–2020)

Anthony Richard Birley FSA (8 October 1937 – 19 December 2020)[1] was a British ancient historian, archaeologist and academic. He was born in Chesterholm, Northumberland. He was known for his works to preserve the Vindolanda in Chesterholm.

Birley was the Professor of Ancient History at the University of Manchester from 1974 to 1990 and at University of Düsseldorf from 1990 to 2002.[2] He was an Honorary Professor in the Department of Classics and Ancient History at the University of Durham.[3]

Birley died of lung cancer on 19 December 2020 in Chesterholm, aged 83.[1]
