Steve McQueen’s World War II epic Blitz lands in November, and here’s the first trailer for the film right here.
Just yesterday we reported that Steve McQueen could be heading to the small screen, collaborating with Amazon Studios on a TV series with something of a dystopian bent. While we wouldn’t be opposed to seeing McQueen tackle long-form storytelling, we’re first looking forward to what is surely his most commercial feature film, the epic World War II drama, Blitz.
As the title suggests, the action will be set amid the horrendous bombings that rained down on London (and other British cities) throughout World War II.
The synopsis for the film reads as such:
Blitz follows the epic journey of George (Elliott Heffernan), a 9-year-old boy in World War II London whose mother Rita (Saoirse Ronan) sends him to safety in the English countryside. George, defiant and...

Across his career, British director Steve McQueen has always proved ambitious – whether directing all five instalments of Small Axe, flirting with blockbuster territory in Widows, or unflinchingly conjuring American history in 12 Years A Slave. And his latest is not only another film set in the past, but it once again finds him working on a big canvas – get ready for Blitz, set in World War II amid the (you guessed it) London Blitz, as the capital city is devastated by enemy bombers. Caught in the middle of it all is 9-year-old George (Elliott Heffernan), sent away by his mother Rita – played by Saoirse Ronan – to safety, but inadvertently caught up in the middle of the conflict as the city blazes around him. Watch the trailer here:
While there have been plenty of World War II films in recent years, few have gone into the heart of the Blitz – and McQueen’s film,...

Saoirse Ronan plays a distraught mother searching for her missing son in World War II East London in the trailer for Steve McQueen’s Blitz, which dropped on Thursday.
The drama follows George, a 9-year-old boy, played by Elliot Heffernan, in wartime London after his mother Rita (Ronan) sends him as an evacuee to safety in the English countryside. But defiant and determined to get back home on his own to his mother and grandfather Gerald (Paul Weller) in East London, George encounters real danger as a distraught Rita tries to find her footloose son as he faces mounting peril.
“Why can’t you tell me, where’s my boy?” Rita pleads with London police officers at one point in the trailer. Meanwhile, George is seen scurrying for shelter alongside other Londoners in underground subway stations or bombed-out buildings as German Luftwaffe planes continue to bomb the British capital’s east end.

Halina Reijn’s breakout with A24’s Bodies Bodies Bodies was apparently enough for her follow-up project, Babygirl, to score an A-list leading lady in Nicole Kidman. Although Babygirl features some incredible work from Kidman, Reijn’s erotic thriller doesn’t have the juice to be a memorable entry in its genre.
Babygirl Review
In the film, Kidman plays a powerful CEO who puts her personal and professional lives in danger when she begins an affair with an intern who is much younger than her. This is a story we have seen told dozens of times before, but with a name behind the camera like Bodies Bodies Bodies filmmaker Halina Reijn, one hopes that we’re in for a stylish, salacious riff on this familiar territory.
Unfortunately, while Babygirl has plenty of moments with razor-sharp dialogue, the tissue that connects them is not particularly compelling. You’ll have an absolutely delicious bedroom scene,...

The 2024 Toronto International Film Festival has finally wrapped up, closing out a two-week frenzy of world premieres and screenings of highly anticipated offerings making their way across the international festival circuit. For many, TIFF (as well as the Venice and Telluride film festivals) marks the unofficial commencement of awards season, meaning the films that receive the People’s Choice Awards typically earn an early boost for their campaigns. Last year, the top prize went to Cord Jefferson’s publishing industry satire “American Fiction,” which would later earn the writer/director an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay, as well as a nomination for Best Picture. This year’s winner was Mike Flanagan’s Stephen King adaptation “The Life of Chuck,” starring Tom Hiddleston.
12 of the last 14 People’s Choice Award winners at TIFF went on to receive Academy Award nominations for Best Picture and four of them actually won the award.

Plot: A high-powered executive (Nicole Kidman) risks her family and career when she begins an affair with a much younger intern (Harris Dickinson).
Review: You’ve got to hand it to director Halina Reijn – she’s not afraid to be controversial. Her last movie, Bodies Bodies Bodies, was a huge surprise, with it being positioned as a slasher movie but ending up as something of a hilarious prank played on horror fans. This one, Babygirl, tackles issues of consent, grooming, and coercion head-on but dares to allow the audience to make up their own mind about what’s appropriate or not.
It offers Nicole Kidman a very controversial part, with her exec, Romy (Nicole Kidman), seemingly having it all. She runs a wildly profitable company with a loving husband (Antonio Banderas) and a supportive family. Yet, right from the first scene, where we see her in bed with her husband,...

Here, the camera is a gentle companion, nestling in to peer over Frankie’s shoulder, moving with his hand as he reaches for a laminated prayer card of Saint Sebastian from the church pew. Frankie contemplates the card, his thumb moving over Sebastian, who peers up to a hopeless sun as he bleeds out, body shot full of arrows. With our eyes on his hands, we wonder what Frankie is thinking about,...

Babygirl writer-director Halina Reijn accepted Nicole Kidman’s Best Actress accolade at the 81st Venice International Film Festival awards ceremony on the star’s behalf, as the Oscar winner had to step away from the event following her mother’s death.
“Today I arrived in Venice to find out shortly after that my beautiful, brave mother, Janelle Ann Kidman, has just passed,” the Bodies Bodies Bodies filmmaker said in a statement prepared by Kidman, to audible gasps from the audience.
She continued reading, “I am in shock and I have to go to my family, but this award is for her. She shaped me, she guided me, and she made me. I’m beyond grateful that I get to say her name to all of you through Halina. The collision of life and art is heartbreaking, and my heart is broken.”
Reijn concluded, “We love you all, Nicole. Thank you.

The 2024 Venice Film Festival awards ceremony has wrapped up after a sweltering week and a half on the Lido.
The prestigious Golden Lion award for best film went to Pedro Almodóvar’s The Room Next Door. The Spaniard’s first-ever English-language feature received a whopping 17-minute standing ovation when it premiered at the festival. Almodóvar said in his acceptance speech Saturday: “I would like to dedicate it to my family, who is here now… This movie The Room Next Door, it is my first movie in English.. but the spirit is Spanish.”
His film, an adaptation of Sigrid Nunez’s novel What Are You Going Through, follows best-selling writer Ingrid (Julianne Moore) and Martha (Tilda Swinton) as they rekindle their friendship after losing touch. As they immerse themselves in past memories, anecdotes, art and movies, Martha, battling terminal cervical cancer, wants to die with dignity and asks Ingrid to be...

If Catherine Breillat’s subversive stylings crossed ways with a classic screwball romance, it might look something like Halina Reijn’s Babygirl. This charged tale of a female CEO embarking on an affair with her younger male intern bears the most outward resemblance to the late 20th-century erotic thriller. Yet in spirit and subject, it’s a true comedy of remarriage.
As the great scholar Stanley Cavell observed in his study of early sound comedies that depicted adultery and tried to run afoul of the Hays Code by pledging allegiance to monogamous commitment, “The joining of the sexual and the social is called marriage.” Babygirl’s bookending scenes of Nicole Kidman’s Romy achieving orgasm within the confines of her relationship with Antonio Banderas’s Jacob tell the full story of a couple that learns to come together again after an affair. Similar to the resolution of many of those early comedies,...

Angelina Jolie got her flowers. Nicole Kidman and Harris Dickinson got it on. And studios and streamers got busy playing “let’s make a deal.”
The Venice Film Festival, which kicked off on Aug. 28, hasn’t been short on drama, even as it’s been unexpectedly heavy on TV. As befits a glamorous celebration of movies that’s all about excess, this year’s edition has seen more major sales, on-screen sex, politics (on and off the red carpet), and movie-star moments than ever. In addition to Jolie and Kidman, A-listers like Jude Law of “The Order” and the “Wolfs” duo of George Clooney and Brad Pitt flashed their megawatt smiles at the splashy premieres of their films. There promises to be plenty more headline-grabbing events, but as the festival reaches its midpoint, it’s already shaping up to be one of the most consequential in recent memory.

A laptop sits at the edge of the frame, its glow casting shadows across Romy (Nicole Kidman). Porn is playing. There are glimpses of a woman on all fours, gazing behind her at a man who coaxes her on with sneering encouragement. But the images are less important than the tinny voice emanating from them.

Venice has got its sexy back. Erotica of all varieties — gay, straight, kinky and theoretical — is on glorious display at this year’s Venice Film Festival, with plenty of sizzling action onscreen and little of it gratuitous.
Two of the, em, hottest festival titles this year — Halina Reijn’s Babygirl and the TV series Disclaimer from Alfonso Cuarón — open with orgasms. Babygirl also climaxes to a close, with star Nicole Kidman, playing a tech manager who discovers a taste for Bdsm, in a state of near or total undress throughout much of the movie.
Queer, an adaptation of William S. Burroughs’ autobiographical novel, and the latest from Challengers and Call Me by Your Name filmmaker Luca Guadagnino — a director apparently on a one-man mission to bring back sexy cinema — stars Daniel Craig as a drug-addicted American expat in Mexico, circa 1950, who begins to obsess over, and pursue, a younger, bi-curious navy sailor,...

There really is another level of star power when a film adds both George Clooney and Brad Pitt to the equation.
While the big premieres at the 2024 Venice Film Festival so far have had some wiggle room between the film’s listed start time, and when the movie actually begins playing, the “Wolfs” premiere was a whole half hour late to even letting people into the Sala Grande. The Saturday premiere was such a hot ticket that stars like Benedict Cumberbatch, Harris Dickinson, Cailee Spaeny, and Alia Shawkat were all present to support the Apple release, which also stars Austin Abrams and Amy Ryan.
As the credits rolled after midnight, the audience may have lost their energy, leading to an applause afterwards that would not break any records, but the whole event still illuminated how when Clooney and Pitt choose to collaborate, a large audience follows. A point that has...

The Lido is in a frenzy for Wolfs.
Backed by the star power of its veteran A-list stars, Brad Pitt and George Clooney, the Jon Watts-directed film from Apple and Sony had a triumphant world premiere at the Venice Film Festival late Sunday night on the Lido. Expectedly, the crush of fans and media situated outside Palazzo del Cinema went wild for the pair as they arrived on the scene ahead of the screening. And once the final frames hit the screen and the credits rolled, Wolfs received a nearly five-minute standing ovation. Pitt and Clooney seemed to be soaking up the attention, with Pitt singing along to Sade and Clooney offering a “Grazie” to close it out.
Wolfs, also written by Watts, casts Pitt and Clooney as fixers who accidentally end up working the same job. Produced by Clooney’s Smokehouse and Pitt’s Plan B, the film also stars Amy Ryan,...

Technically, Day Four at the Venice Film Festival started at midnight for me, walking out of the after party for “Babygirl” still abuzz, trying and failing to slyly make it onto the water taxi headed to star Harris Dickinson’s after after party under the noses of A24 employees. The preceding event was one of the few gatherings happening during the festival to invite over some press to rub elbows with lead Nicole Kidman, director Halina Reijn, and company, as well as director Christos Nikou (“Fingernails”) and actress Taylor Russell (“Bones and All”) who are each serving on a different jury at La Biennale this year.
While that all made for an exciting start, the day’s offerings made for a more lowkey Saturday, with earlier screenings of films like “Battleground” and “And Their Children After Them,” both competition titles, only drawing moderate buzz. Even the premiere of Israeli filmmaker Amos Gitai’s “Why War,...

Could Nicole Kidman score a fifth Best Actress nomination for her performance in racy thriller Babygirl, which has just debuted at the Venice Film Festival?
The short answer is yes. The longer answer is that it’s complicated.
In the Halina Reijn-directed erotic-thriller, Kidman plays a high-powered CEO who puts her career and family on the line when she begins a torrid affair with her much younger intern (played by Harris Dickinson).
The early word on Kidman from critics here on the Lido is very positive. Deadline’s Damon Wise said: “It’s hard to ignore the amount of dedication, not to mention naked flesh, that she brings to the role….Kidman really goes the distance, imbuing Romy with a psychological vulnerability that is missing from the film it most obvious sounds like (50 Shades of Grey) and presenting a unique reversal of the film it most obviously looks...

At the Venice Film Festival premiere of “Babygirl,” the audience seemed pleased by director Halina Reijn and star Nicole Kidman’s erotic thriller centered on female pleasure.
Before the film even ended, a climactic scene had already elicited claps from viewers inside the Sala Grande. As the credits rolled, the crowd stood and cheered for the cast and crew, which also includes Harris Dickinson, Antonio Banderas, and “Talk to Me” breakout Sophie Wilde.
The upcoming A24 release tells the story of a shipping technology executive, played by Kidman, who enters into a sadomasochistic relationship with one of the new interns at her company, played by Dickinson.
The film marks Reijn’s follow-up to the horror comedy “Bodies Bodies Bodies,” the Dutch actress turned director’s English language debut as a writer, though this time she took on the job of director as well.

Nicole Kidman Heats Up Venice with ‘Babygirl’ and Kinky Sex Onscreen — Festival Day Three Highlights
If only it were just the stars bringing heat to the Venice Film Festival.
This year’s Biennale on the Lido continues to be one of the hottest on record — incoming attendees, if you don’t have one of those Uv-fighting umbrellas, brace yourself. How Nicole Kidman, water-taxiing into the Lido for the world premiere of the psychosexual thriller “Babygirl,” arrived at Friday’s press conference in a black dress without an ounce of sweat is anyone’s guess. Nicole Kidman was in the house Thursday as writer-director Halina Reijn’s Babygirl had its world premiere screening at the Venice Film Festival. The A24 erotic thriller garnered a seven-minute-plus ovation from the Sala Grande audience.
Kidman was joined at the premiere by fellow cast members Harris Dickinson, Antonio Banderas and Sophie Wilde, as well as filmmaker Reijn.
After the screening, Reijn and Kidman hugged and chatted as they made their way down from the theater gallery. The woo-hooing only stopped when they were escorted out of the building.
Babygirl centers on Kidman’s high-powered CEO who puts her life’s work on the line when she begins a torrid affair with her much-younger intern. A24 will next take the film to TIFF before releasing the film in the U.S. on Christmas Day.

Nicole Kidman and Harris Dickinson brought sexy back to Venice Friday night at the premiere of Halina Reijn’s kinky, sex-filled “Babygirl.”
In the A24 movie, Kidman plays a high-powered CEO who starts a secret affair with her new intern (Dickinson).
While not a conventional art house movie, “Babygirl” stimulated the Venice audience. As the end credits rolled on the film at the Sala Grande Theatre, the crowd erupted into a 6.5-minute standing ovation.
As the audience cheered, Kidman hugged Reijn and beamed and blushed at all the attention.
It was a sweaty night in Italy — in more ways than one. “It’s so hot,” Kidman said as she waved to fans before entering the theater earlier, on a day when temperatures crept up to 90 degrees. But “Babygirl” seemed to crank up the heat even more as the movie got underway. Kidman’s character Romy pushes the envelope in a...

At a Friday afternoon press conference, Nicole Kidman said that the anticipation of presenting the world premiere of her new erotic thriller Babygirl had her feeling “exposed and vulnerable and frightened.” But those emotions certainly were not on display as the Oscar-winning actress hit the red carpet at Palazzo del Cinema in Venice later that night.
Kidman looked every bit like the confident movie star as she faced the crush of photographers, press and adoring fans in an avant-garde couture creation by Daniel Roseberry for Schiaparelli. Fans lining the barricade erupted with cheers as she made her entrance in a striking ensemble that featured a corset bustier in nude organza embroidered with black sequins that cascaded into black fringes. The look was paired with a long black velvet skirt and stilettos. Kidman greeted her director Halina Reijn, dressed in a white cape, and the two gathered for a warm embrace.

Boosted by Locarno-awarded debut Instinct, Dutch actor-director Halina Reijn fit nicely in the A24 canon with her satirical thriller Bodies Bodies Bodies. Yet the latter elicited rather lukewarm critical responses and it almost seemed Reijn might have been a one-hit European wonder fallen prey to the American dream. Then came Babygirl. As one of the first competition titles to grace the Lido, it promises a lot: not only does its title roll off the tongue with a delightful ring, it leaves one feeling a bit giddy (and a little naughty) for having uttered it aloud. Let’s not forget this is a film about a tech CEO / star mom / perfect wife (played by none other than ice queen Nicole Kidman) submitting to a much-younger intern (Harris Dickinson) to the point of literally eating from his hand.
