Post-2005 Doctor Who main TV-show companions. That’s the first qualifier to add to the following list. For now at least, we’re celebrating only the Nu-Who main companions who had their own proper stint travelling in the Tardis, or any of the many wonderful actors who preceded them in the classic era.
Now that the rationale has been set out, join us to round up some of the best after-Who roles from the likes of Billie Piper, Freema Agyeman, Catherine Tate, Karen Gillan, Arthur Darvill, Jenna Coleman, Pearl Mackie, Mandip Gill and Tosin Cole. It’s too early to add Millie Gibson to this gang but look out for her in rebooted period drama The Forsyte Saga when it arrives.

Some breaking news from Westeros: The Game of Thrones prequel series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has added a major talent from Black Mirror to serve as its debut season’s lead director, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
Owen Harris has boarded the HBO drama as an executive producer and will also direct the first three episodes, establishing the directorial vision for the series. Harris is best known for helming two of Black Mirror‘s finest episodes — “Be Right Back” and the widely acclaimed “San Junipero.”
In addition, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms‘ episode count has now been revealed: The first season will be six episodes, making for a tighter opener than the 10-episode first seasons of Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon. The run time seems appropriate given Knight is an adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s 160-page novella The Hedge Knight rather than one of his 900-page epic novels.

Netflix’s “Scoop” is inspired by the real events behind the bold efforts of “Newsnight” booker Sam McAlister to secure an interview with Prince Andrew amidst the fallout he felt from his relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
It traces the admirable behind-the-scenes teamwork of McAlister, journalist and interviewer Emily Maitlis (Gillian Anderson), editor Esme Wren (Romola Garai), producer Stewart Maclean (Richard Goulding) and ultimate fact-checker Freddy (Jordan Kouamé), as well as photographer Jae Donnolly (Connor Swindells).
High stakes, adrenaline and twists and turns make “Scoop” a compelling watch, in addition to the star-stacked cast that portrays all the real-life players.

Back in 1967, The Beatles told us, “All You Need Is Love.” Back in 2004, writer Hiroshi Sakurazaka brought the world a novel called All You Need Is Kill, which served as the basis for the 2014 Tom Cruise sci-fi adventure Edge of Tomorrow… and I could understand why the title was changed for the movie, as All You Need Is Kill never sounded quite right to me. A better version would be All You Need Is Death – and that’s the title the makers of an upcoming folk horror movie have decided to use for their film, which is set to receive a VOD and limited theatrical release on April 11th. With that release date just a couple weeks away, a trailer for All You Need Is Death has arrived online, and you can check it out in the embed above.

As I queued up the first episode of Netflix’s “One Day,” I was reminded of the words of a great man: “I am ready to get hurt again.”
“One Day” of course shares its title and source material with David Nicholls’ 2009 novel and Lone Scherfig’s 2011 film — but in Nicole Taylor’s episodic version (executive produced by Nicholls) starring Ambika Mod and Leo Woodall, the story finds its wings, telling the story of Emma (Mod) and Dexter (Woodall) over decades with a snapshot of just one day in the year.
The episodic structure lends itself beautifully to Nicholls’ premise, letting each year breathe and allowing viewers to settle into Emma and Dex’s shifting dynamics — and by extension, the wider world of nebulous relationships. There is the night they (almost) slept together, the day they miss each other’s calls, the trip to Europe (with one bed), the catastrophic...

This article contains spoilers for Mrs. Davis episode 8.
It’s perfectly natural for a director to develop a niche. What’s rarer, however, is for a director to develop a niche as specific as Owen Harris has. After getting his start helming episodes of TV shows like Secret Diary of a Call Girl and Misfits, the London-born director entered the dystopian world of Black Mirror to helm three of the often cynical show’s most reasonably cheerful installments.
By the grueling standards of the long-running sci-fi anthology, Harris’s three episodes: “Be Right Back,” “San Junipero,” and “Striking Vipers” are positively saccharine. San Junipero in particular is often fondly remembered as “That one Black Mirror with the happy ending.” Getting to explore the brighter side (or at least less dark side) of technology was no accident for the director invested in human-centric storytelling.

[This story contains spoilers for I Hate Suzie Too.]
When it premiered in that year of years, 2020, I Hate Suzie was the opposite of feel-good TV. The taut, anxiety-fueled decent taken by actress Suzie Pickles (Billie Piper) when a phone hack aired her dirty laundry and imploded her career ended with a woman at, seemingly, her lowest point.
But things can always go lower. That’s why its three-episode follow-up, I Hate Suzie Too, takes place almost exclusively in the cultural sub-basement of celebrity dance competitions. There, Pickles battles naysayers, a vengeful ex-husband and her own recurrent demons while trying to rehabilitate her public image. Things go about as well as can be expected, with a denouement that is comically cringe and serves a mirror for viewers who’ve likely been guilty of rubber-necking over the celebrity breakdowns of yore.

“She Said” screenwriter Rebecca Lenkiewicz has said the New York Times journalists who broke the Harvey Weinstein story in 2017 fed her chapters of their book as they were writing it in order to bring the novel to screen sooner.
Speaking as part of a Variety-sponsored London Film Festival panel on screenwriting, the British scribe of such films as the Keira Knightley-fronted “Colette” and Pawel Pawlikowski’s “Ida” described working closely with reporters Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey to write Universal’s film adaptation of their 2019 book. The process took around four years, said Lenkiewicz.
“I started working on it before I read the book,” said the Devon-born writer, who had six “freeing” weeks of writing on her own before even getting sight of a chapter.

The Venice Film Festival is honoring French screen icon Catherine Deneuve with its Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement.
Throughout her career, Deneuve has worked with some of Europe’s greatest directors, such as Luis Buñuel, Francois Truffaut, Manoel De Oliveira, Roman Polanski and Lars von Trier, to name a few.
Deneuve’s long rapport with the Lido harks back to 1967, when Buñuel’s “Belle de Jour” — in which she played a bourgeoise Paris housewife who seeks erotic liberation through part-time work in a brothel — won the Golden Lion. Deneuve then won the Venice Volpi Cup for best actress for her role in Nicole Garcia’s “Place Vendôme” in 1998, and presided over the fest’s jury in 2006.

“Goya, Carrière and the Ghost of Buñuel,” which plays Cannes Classics this Saturday, begins with French film great Jean-Claude Carrière in a train, singing an ancient song in Occitan, the language of Provence, where he came from.
Visiting Goya’s birthplace, he’ spies a cauldron and comments that there was one like that in his own family home.
Towards the end of the film, surveying “The Colossus,” Goya’s painting of a giant dominating tiny people in a valley below who flee in all directions, Carrière observes that the painting capture a sense of immigration. Unlike so many of his friends, and indeed his wife, Nahal Tajadod, Carrière notes, he will have the privilege of being buried in the same place where he was born.

“Killing Eve” fans have never seen Villanelle like this. The BBC America drama returned on Sunday night for Season 4 with what appears to be a major role reversal for its two lead characters: While Eve (Sandra Oh) is taking on a harder edge with a gun in hand, Villanelle (Jodie Comer) seems eager to take a more righteous path.
That has led Villanelle to a religious community, where she’s eager to prove that she’s not a monster. But in her haste to get baptized and prove her worth, Villanelle still gets in her own way. Enter what the show is calling her “Villanelle Vision”: Villanelle starts imagining a version of herself, dressed as Jesus Christ, who has some hard truths for the assassin.
Comer told Variety that playing the vision was “Terrifying. Fun. Hairy. I’ll leave you with that one,” she quipped. “I hope [viewers] enjoy it.

BBC America’s “Killing Eve” is coming to an end, and on Tuesday the network revealed the trailer for its fourth and final season.
Villanelle (Jodie Comer) and Eve (Sandra Oh) find themselves seeking to change their lives — Villanelle through therapy — in the new trailer. Is Villanelle developing a conscience while Eve goes in the opposite direction? The trailer sure seems to hint at that.
The final season will see Eve and Villanelle starting out in very different places. Eve is working on a revenge mission, while Villanelle is trying to prove she’s not a monster.
Meanwhile Carolyn (Fiona Shaw) is chasing down The Twelve and the person who ordered the hit on Kenny.
Each of the women are driven by “passion, revenge and obsession, building towards. messy, nuanced and totally glorious season finale,” according to AMC.
Season 4 is written by Laura Neal. Neal is also an executive producer on the series.

Billie Piper has joined the cast of Lena Dunham’s feature adaptation of “Catherine, Called Birdy” for Working Title and Amazon.
Piper stars in the medieval coming-of-age comedy opposite “Fleabag’s” Andrew Scott and “Game of Thrones” breakout Bella Ramsey. The film, written and directed by Dunham, is in the early stages of production.

My producer at the time sent it to Jean-Claude and he invited me to his house in Paris. I was very nervous. He said he liked the idea very much. Within a few minutes, I watched him...

Driven from Spain by Fascists and from New York by commie hunters, he found a cinematic haven in Mexico, adapting his surreal mindset to popular film forms. These final three French features embrace the surrealist ethos, where a coherent narrative is optional. We definitely recognize our ‘rational’ world; Buñuel’s high art simply tells the truth.

“I was really interested in what happens when you have to really face who you are,” explains Lucy Prebble on the creation of her show “I Hate Suzie.” Prebble co-created the drama from HBO Max and Sky with friend Billie Piper who plays the titular character. She wrote all eight episodes of Season 1 (in addition to serving as executive producer), which explores what happens to a famous actress after the cloud is hacked and her explicit photos are posted online. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
After working together on the series “Secret Diary of a Call Girl” and the play “The Effect,” Prebble and Piper began discussing what other projects they were interested in working on together. The writer remembers approaching the conversations with the thought: “what would I do if I could actually do anything?” She initially developed a female friendship driven story, akin to her and Piper’s real life friendship.

“We wanted each episode to feel formally different,” says Billie Piper of her wild new HBO Max/Sky series “I Hate Suzie.” The Olivier Award-winning actress plays the central role of Suzie Pickles, an actress about to revive her career with a major role. But her professional and personal life unravel when her phone is hacked and salacious photos end up on the internet. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
The “we” Piper references refers to her friend Lucy Prebble, the writer with whom she co-created the show. The pair previously collaborated on British series “Secret Diary of a Call Girl” and the play “The Effect.” The actress confesses that she wanted to befriend Prebble because “she wanted to talk about things that were uncomfortable and that’s always been very interesting to me as a performer.” Their bond reached its stride during the women’s late 20s, where Piper...

Jenna Lyons, the former creative director and president of J. Crew, is now a reality show star. HBO Max’s “Stylish With Jenna Lyons” follows her as she builds her design firm while hosting a competition to find her new employees. Variety checked in with Lyons ahead of the series’ Dec. 3 premiere to find out some of her favorite fashion moments on film.
Favorite fashion in film: The first time I saw “Belle de Jour,” it made me want to run to the hairdresser, wear thick black eyeliner, granny shoes, silk stockings and a trench coat. Catherine Deneuve is breathtakingly beautiful, poised, with a certain darkness to her.
I also recently rewatched “To Catch a Thief.” Cary Grant and Grace Kelly are absolute visual magic. Grant’s effortless grace and style made me appreciate menswear in a way I hadn’t before.
Favorite film that takes place in the fashion world: “Unzipped.

Lucy Prebble wrote and co-executive produced “Succession,” one of the best television shows in recent memory. Now, the writer’s latest project, the British drama “I Hate Suzie,” is nearly ready to make its American debut. HBO Max premiered the trailer for the upcoming show on Monday.
Per HBO Max, the synopsis reads: Suzie Pickles (Billie Piper), a star on the wane, has her whole life upended when her phone is hacked and a photo of her in an extremely compromising position is released for the whole world to see. This excruciatingly honest show follows the various stages of Suzie’s trauma episode by episode, through Shock, Denial, Fear, Shame, Bargaining, Guilt, Anger and Acceptance as Suzie and her best friend and manager Naomi try to hold her life, career, and marriage together in the face of being exposed for who she truly is. But who the hell even is that?...

Is Joseph Losey’s elusive, maudit masterpiece really a masterpiece? Stanley Baker’s foolish lout of a writer ruins his life pursuing the wanton Jeanne Moreau, and it’s hard to tell if she’s punishing him or he’s punishing himself. Losey’s directing skills are in top form on location in Venice and Rome for this absorbing art film. Pi’s overdue and very welcome disc sorts out the multiple release versions for the first time, and in so doing finally makes the show critically accessible. Co-starring (swoon) Virna Lisi and James Villiers.
