Description | Stanley Lord (1877-1962): Merchant sailor and officer. He is best known as the captain of the Californian, the ship which was halted in the ice on the night the Titanic struck the iceberg. Lord's actions on that night have provoked controversy ever since; it is certain that the Californian could have done a great deal to help the passengers of the Titanic, and that it did not, but there is no certainty over whether Lord could have or should have known this (the arguments come down to disputed log entries and position calculations). Whatever his moral culpability, his failure to act cost Lord substantially; although he did not face direct discipline, he was forced to take less prestigious commands for the rest of his life. |
