Since John Allsopp mentioned the View Transitions API at Web Directions Code 2023 in Melbourne, I've been closely tracking its progress. Experimenting with it in Angular Spotify has been a joy. While my PR is still a work in progress for a single-page app like Angular Spotify (https://lnkd.in/gY6zQnBi)), it's exciting to see the View Transitions API advancing to a W3C Candidate Recommendation. Moreover, it now supports multi-page apps (MPAs), with the draft for cross-document navigation currently in public working draft status. This breakthrough means transitioning between pages in traditional multi-page apps, including those built with server-side rendering frameworks like ASP.NET MVC, PHP, Ruby, or static site generators such as Jekyll or Hugo, feels incredible with just @view-transition and view-transition-name in CSS! whenever someone says strict typing doesn't really help .. because c/c++/jvm/go all still have null.. is very true. you need something like rust. and yes, I know that optional arguments can still have the same problem, but at least they happen deliberately, not due to slop in the language. protobufs biggest weakness, is the sheer number of Maybe that sneak in because of it's wire format.

This article from Harness CEO Jyoti Bansal on an effort they undertook to survey 500 developers is eye opening. "Yet almost 70% of developers wait more than a week to finish [code reviews]." Waiting is the worst waste you can introduce into any system. We've spent decades finding ways to decouple, optimatize, and parallel activities in order to get to production. And yet, here we are. Yet a plurality of us have to wait a week or more just to hear back on what we've produced. Talk with your teams. Ask them how long they wait. Then ask them how they might create smaller changes, smaller batches, more frequent pushes in order to move code along. And then make those changes, a little at a time, with some observables (both qualitative and quantitative), in order to measure efficacy. They'll thank you for caring about getting the work done. Code will get to prod faster. The people who use the code will benefit from faster delivery. Everyone wins and feels good about it in the process. We're not growing crops. My first time giving a presentation as an Elastic employee was "Practical GenAI with Go" at the office in Sydney, arranged by Gabi Amaral Dan Wicks and of course Katie Fry. You'll find a link to the slides below! This talk overviews #genai from both "what things are" and "nuts-and-bolts" perspectives. This emphasizes technology written in #golang. Notably, the server is #ollama and code examples are in Parakeet. We covered how ollama works for example, and since this was at an Elastic office, even how to use Elasticsearch as the VectorDB for RAG workflows! The dozens present in Sydney were fantastic participants, offering insights along the way, and a healthy amount of feedback at the end. https://lnkd.in/eGEVx9Nu

I like QuickBooks Online, I really do, but their API has some serious and known flaws that make integration painful. For years they've been flagellated over not including an invoice status in their invoice API. Am I importing a voided invoice? I have to do interpretive dance in consumptive code to *hope* I get it right. And if you're managing customers in an outside system, there's no merging capability within the API, so you must inverse your process and use webhooks, or do two isolated operations and ensure you're updating your relationships between the two. In the grand scheme of things, it's a minor nuisance, but it's a nuisance all the same. Perhaps it's a sign that your organization should be moving to a more powerful accounting system. QuickBooks isn't really aimed at the enterprise or higher volume nonprofits, in spite of what they might say.
