English: The video illustrates the regenerative succession that occurs in the vegetation of the Yahorlyk Kut Peninsula. The video is based on RGB composites from the near infrared, red, and green Landsat bands. This composites formed using QGIS software, the video was created using the non-linear video editing module in the Blender software. The summer scenes of the Landsat 5 (TM sensor) (for 1986, 1994, 1996, 2002, 2006, 2010 and 2011) and Landsat 8 (OLI sensor) (for 2013 and 2018) were used for the preparation of composites.
Only the small part of the Yahorlyk Kut peninsula (the one to the left of the AB line) from 1959 to 1998 was part of the Black Sea Reserve. The rest of the peninsula was a military training ground, which lasted until 1994. In 1998, part of the former military training ground (the one to the left of the green dotted line) became part of the Black Sea Biosphere Reserve. Satellite images of the 80s-90s show that the vegetation of the reserved and unreserved parts of the peninsula are strong different. The regenerative succession of vegetation began after the preservation of the former military training ground. The difference between the old and new protected areas of the peninsula is becoming less noticeable in satellite images obtained in the 2000s and almost disappears in images obtained after 2010. Thus, preservation is an effective tool for restoring the unique steppe ecosystems of the Yahorlyk Kut Peninsula. Scientists of the Black Sea Biosphere Reserve study the restoration succession and constantly monitor the ecosystem state of the peninsula.English: Regenerative succession of the Yahorlyk Kut Peninsula |
