The fourth round of the competition has finished, with anyone scoring less than 673 points being eliminated. It was a high scoring round with all but one of the contestants who progressed to the final having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were

  •   Epicgenius, with 2173 points topping the scores, gained mainly from a featured article, 38 good articles and 9 DYKs. He was followed by
  •   Sammi Brie, with 1575 points, gained mainly from a featured article, 28 good articles and 50 good article reviews. Close behind was
  •   Thebiguglyalien, with 1535 points mainly gained from a featured article, 15 good articles, 26 good article reviews and lots of bonus points.

Between them during round 4, contestants achieved 12 featured articles, 3 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 126 good articles, 46 DYK entries, 14 ITN entries, 67 featured article candidate reviews and 147 good article reviews. Congratulations to our eight finalists and all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them and within 24 hours of the end of the final. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.

I will be standing down as a judge after the end of the contest. I think the Cup encourages productive editors to improve their contributions to Wikipedia and I hope that someone else will step up to take over the running of the Cup. Sturmvogel 66 (talk), and Cwmhiraeth (talk)

Gujarati government film awards

edit

Hello Mr. Nizil,

Since you know a lot about Gujarati cinema, would you happen to have an idea where one could find an official version for these Gujarati government awards lists that could be used as a reference here on WP? I haven't been able to find anything with my own web searches. 111.94.147.174 (talk) 12:13, 31 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

I could not find any online sources. Here some news share some info. Gujarat Govt. publishes Gujarat magazine in English and Gujarati which covers all activities of Govt. So this also covers news about awards ceremony but may not show complete awardees list. For example, here (16-Mar-2024) publication has info on awards of 2020-2022 on second last page. May be more information can be found on earlier issues. Or directly contacting Govt. Office could be helpful. Regards,- Nizil (talk) 11:09, 1 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you sir. It's too bad I'm not in India so I can't go looking for old issues in a library. Maybe I'll try contacting the offices directly but I'm not sure because I have a feeling it'll ba a waste of time. I think only if the first person who sees the message happens to care a lot about how well Gujarati culture is represented on English WP would something come from it and I think that's a low chance with the bureaucracy.
Also sorry about that stupid typo I made before. 125.26.51.245 (talk) 14:18, 1 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
I think we can find at least few years of information in news, Gujarat issues available online, and elsewhere. I agree that contacting Govt. Office might not be fruitful. I will try to get the year lists, if possible. The blog owner which you had suggested has some access to list. He/she might help if an be contacted in some way. I generally focus on the films for which I already have some kind of solid information (and reliable source as per WP:RS). And there are too many films/film lists to work with. So generally focus on them. I also work on a lot of other topics related to Gujarat and Gujarati too (and on Gujarati Wikipedia too). You can go ahead with film articles for which there are references and if we can find award references, they can be added later. Feel free to ask for help. And register a user account here so all your contribution is listed under your user name. :D -Nizil (talk) 14:46, 1 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
I am currently working on Draft:Lakho Fulani (film).- Nizil (talk) 14:47, 1 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Well if there was contact information for the blog owner I'd gladly get in touch and ask them but I couldn't find anything on the site and it hasn't been updated since 2018 as far as I can tell, so who knows what's become of this person. I'm more interested in yesteryears than current. It's always great when people post rare information but it's less great if they don't give their source because they want others to marvel how special they are to have this knowledge. I think this information is probably legit but it'd be so much easier if they had mentioned where it's taken from. This is why I like WP policy of clear sources and credit. 125.26.51.245 (talk) 15:30, 1 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

A barnstar for you!

edit
  The Original Barnstar
Excellent work writing about cyclones in the north Indian Ocean! I saw you adding information to a few older seasons, and I also saw you working on the article for Cyclone Asna. I've been editing Wikipedia long enough to know how important the storms in that basin are, and how few editors usually work on them, so sincerest thanks for your contributions. Keep up the great work. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 18:57, 8 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for your kind words and the barnstar! I have focused on cyclone articles that have affected Gujarat, as it is a region I am particularly interested in. I try to create informative and detailed articles on cyclones as a way to document the history of these cyclones. Unfortunately, public interest often wanes as cyclones weaken. Regards, Nizil (talk) 19:13, 8 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Absolutely! I've found that it can be a little lonely editing at times, wondering if anyone notices your work, so I wanted to make sure your work is noticed. I love reading and researching about cyclones that affect particular areas, so I totally get where you're coming from. I recently worked on List of California hurricanes (as that is where I live), and that was an enjoyable project to work on. In fact, there could totally be an equivalent article for List of Gujarat tropical cyclones. There is Tropical cyclones in India, but that focuses on India as a whole, and it's a huge country. I'd say, given Gujarat's size and importance, there is probably a lot of research on Gujarat-specific cyclones, such as climatology, or the deadliest cyclones to affect the state. I'm aware of the 1998 Gujarat cyclone, which killed more than a thousand people, but my knowledge of older cyclones is limited. And that's where it's useful having someone focus on a particular region - you never know what you might find! ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 19:33, 8 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for your encouragement. I will continue to contribute to cyclone articles. I sometimes find the meteorological processes behind cyclone a bit challenging to understand. Could you please verify the accuracy of the meteorological history and infobox data for Cyclone Asna? Nizil (talk) 07:01, 10 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Good job with Asna. The met history looks pretty thorough for its origins, it's just out of order. You have the monsoon part of its origins at the end, but that should be at the beginning. There will be a better resource once the IMD releases its preliminary report. We need a source confirming the same low on 18 August near Bangladesh was the one that developed into Asna. Also, where was Asna located when the IMD classified as a cyclonic storm? Was it over land, or over water? Was there a reason the storm moved the way it did? (usually it's a ridge) How strong was the storm at its peak? And when did it dissipate? ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 07:09, 10 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
