The best race

After Baldur's Gate 3 was officially released, the developers decided to remove characteristic racial bonuses to abilities. From now on, regardless of chosen race, the players can apply a +2 and +1 bonus to any chosen ability.

This decision means there aren't preferred classes for each race anymore, and the whole character creation process has become much more flexible.

However, the game still has unique racial skills individual to each race that can become useful in certain circumstances. For example, Half-orc's racial traits with their offensive and defensive capabilities synergize well with the role of a team tank fighting in melee range, while Elven tricks greatly complement the arsenal of a powerful magic wielder.

In case of BG3, it is hard to talk about the concept of the "best" race. The immensely flexible character creation wizard makes most races work in a wide spectrum of specializations, and it depends on the player how they will achieve greatness with their hero.

Are there subraces in BG3?

Some of the races available in Baldur's Gate 3 have subraces that differ in terms of background, appearance, and unique racial traits and proficiencies. What race and/or sub-race you choose for your character can affect his or her relationship with other characters you encounter during your playthrough.
