Short biography
Ms. Carriger began writing in order to cope with being raised in obscurity by an expatriate Brit and an incurable curmudgeon. She escaped small town life and inadvertently acquired several degrees in Higher Learning. Ms. Carriger then traveled the historic cities of Europe, subsisting entirely on biscuits secreted in her handbag. She now resides in the Colonies, surrounded by a harem of Armenian lovers, where she insists on tea imported directly from London and cats that pee into toilets. She is fond of teeny tiny hats and tropical fruit. Soulless is her first book.

Sophronia attends a finishing school with a difference, to begin with it's supported by three dirigibles and all the ladies learn all the necessary etiquette and assassination techniques they need to survive in this society, that closely resembles 1800's England but with a few differences.

A fun, undemanding read.

To accompany the bodice ripper, a waistcoat ripper! The couple here are werewolves who had a one night stand and then pined for each another for twenty years. Unlike the more overwrought [b:Romancing the Inventor|30731095|Romancing the Inventor (Supernatural Society, #1)|Gail Carriger|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1474415642l/30731095._SX50_.jpg|51269643], here romance takes something of a backseat to werewolf pack shenanigans. I did enjoy said shenanigans, which begin with an argument about curtain fabric. Then mystery babies appear and the pack must work out why. It pleased me that the explanation was quite dark, yet delivered with Carriger’s characteristic cheerful flippancy. They turn out to be intended as human sacrifices from werewolf worshippers, albeit unwelcome! The werewolves protest that babies are too fatty and it’s much more satisfying to chase down some prey. I liked the clothing details, slightly awkward pack dynamics, and cameos by Major Channing. By comparison, the romantic leads weren’t quite as compelling and their pining was of limited intensity as they were distracted by prosaic matters. The sex scenes were extremely coy, without even the mildly cheeky mathematical euphemisms of [b:Romancing the Inventor|30731095|Romancing the Inventor (Supernatural Society, #1)|Gail Carriger|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1474415642l/30731095._SX50_.jpg|51269643].

The book then concludes with a short story starring the father of Alexia Tarabotti, heroine of the ‘Parasol Protectorate’ series. Although brief, this includes some intriguing world-building details. I’m not completely convinced by Carriger’s depiction of the British class system, but I respect her obsession with cravats. Overall, another fun distraction from the vicissitudes of utility companies who claim I owe them £175 for no apparent reason.

A friend saw the cover of ‘Romancing the Inventor’ and asked me, “Are you reading a bodice ripper?” Yes, indeed I am. I find that during the stressful period of a house-move, what you need is a frivolous supernatural romance novel or several. Having already read [a:Gail Carriger|2891665|Gail Carriger|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1476925456p2/2891665.jpg]’s 'Parasol Protectorate' series, I knew I could rely on her for light, amusing nonsense. Even better, ‘Romancing the Inventor’ and its companion [b:Romancing the Werewolf|31287528|Romancing the Werewolf (Supernatural Society, #2)|Gail Carriger|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1505868399l/31287528._SX50_.jpg|51948305] both centre on gay couples, while the 'Parasol Protectorate' series was pretty darn heterosexual. Although there isn’t a great deal of depth to this story, it’s fun and rather adorable. The narrator is an attractive parlourmaid named Imogene Hale, working in a household of vampires. She pines for the French inventor Genevieve Lefoux, previously introduced in one of the 'Parasol Protectorate' novels, while dodging amorous footmen and hungry vampires.

During the last-but-one stressful house-move, I read several of [a:Laurell K Hamilton|9550|Laurell K. Hamilton|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1399387919p2/9550.jpg]’s Merry Gentry novels and Carriger is a definitely lot more coy about sex scenes. Merry Gentry novels are all orgy all the time, with occasional breaks for graphic violence, while Carriger is much more inclined towards flirtation and romantic tension. Her fondness for brackets and periodic Americanisms are mildly annoying and the outcome is certainly never in doubt, but this is definitely a pleasant distraction from the need to phone up three recalcitrant energy companies.

It's a pretty good book. It reminds me of Murder Your Employer: The McMasters Guide to Homicide by Rupert Holmes.

We don't get a lot of world building in book one. It starts off in what one can only assume is the Regency Era of England with a steampunk twist.

We follow our main character Sophronia, and other equally oddly named characters, as she attends a finishing school for girls. This finishing school isn't your average school though.

There is humor, a mystery and a bit of coming of age as well. I will be reading the series.… (more)
