Affecting historical fiction from the always dependable Kearsley. Set during the reign of King James Vi and I, court intrigue, adventure, and personal growth make for a satisfying story. Unusually for Kearsley, there is only a single storyline, albeit with a few flashbacks of memory.

Recommended.

I always enjoy Susanna Kearsley's novels, although I do somewhat struggle to keep the characters straight in this interconnected series. I think I would have liked this book a lot more if I had reread some of the other books recently and could have made more connections between the characters. As it was, I enjoyed this book, but didn't find it highly compelling.

Susanna Kearsley's "The Shadowy Horses" sets an archaeological dig around the Roman Legio IX Hispana which went missing in Britain in 120C.E. Multiple storylines are woven around the dig, including the child Robbie who can see the ghost of a legionairre.
