Austrian princess Sassard goes to Oxford and trouble ensues. Lots of unanswered questions here--this is Losey, after all. But it is all rather engrossing in an uneasy way. Very good performances all around. Screenwriter Pinter has a great cameo as a television producer Bogarde meets in London.

Very good cast and a few good scenes, but the script fails to create much tension. There's a heist, but we don't see the planning or particularly understand how it works. There's a love story, but it isn't believable. There are good guys and bad guys and there are lots of prisoners wearing ties. Good cinematography, certainly.

Slow moving and consistently odd, I nevertheless found this compelling. Perhaps it is the performances. Michael Caine is a writer who suspects his wife of having an affair during a trip to Baden-Baden. He then invites her suspected lover, Helmut Berger, into their home. I found myself laughing out loud at how bizarre this all was, and I don't think the laughter was out of place--and perhaps the director intended it. On the other hand, it could have been four glasses of Elijah Craig laughing. As the wife, Glenda Jackson is incredibly good and incredibly sexy. Great supporting cast and great on-location filming in Baden-Baden and the French Riviera.… (more)
