I keep going back and forth between 3 and 4 stars, but I’m going to leave it at 4. The way Machado tells her story is unlike any other memoir I’ve read. She manages to craft a linear narrative in a very non-linear way, and I found her writing to be completely engrossing.

Her Body And Other Parties is a collection of short horror stories. Some were really interesting, but overall, I think this would be a fun book to read during Halloween season (plus almost every story had a bit of a sapphic touch to it, which was fun to read).

Overall, I would recommend this for a quick spooky season read, but most of the stories left me saying "huh???" more than they brought out any real feeling from me, so I'm unfortunately left disappointed (and wondering if I'm just tragically too stupid for adult horror stories!).

my personal ranking for the stories, from favorite to least favorite:

1. The Husband Stitch

2. The Resident

3. Inventory

4. Real Women Have Bodies

5. Eight Bites

6. Mothers

7. Especially Heinous (this is just barely above being at the bottom - I really didn't enjoy this one)

8. Difficult At Parties

A dark retelling of the classic kiddie horror story, "The Girl with the Green Ribbon". (Why this story was in a early readers' book, I'll never understand!)

This retelling stays true to the essence of the original, but is far more adult in nature, with erotica details added and the plot lengthened out. But it's still an interesting story.

You can read it online for free on https://granta.com/the-husband-stitch/.

A bunch of queer, sex laden, weird and confusing short stories that I just didn’t get.
“The husband stitch” was probably my favourite but overall I didn’t enjoy or understand the stories, the writing was good but this wasn’t for me.
