Lions, oh my

Interesting start to a shifter series. Lions are very cool, but toss in being shifters, and you've got a fun series.

Rough

There’s good story here, but there are flaws that keep it from being a good novel.

It seems to copy what you get from other series without really understanding why. At one point someone states that magic must be hidden, yet the witch MC clearly did something profoundly unnatural when she froze a glass of vodka at a bar solid enough it broke the glass. And there is no rhyme or reason for how or why magic works. It acts more as a Deus Ex lever for the author than a part of a functioning world.

This also felt a bit like it wasn’t the first book, as many times characters reference earlier actions. But it was actually better written for all that, as I did not feel like I was missing anything in particular.

I can’t recommend this book as the flaws worked against it, but it is not a terrible example of the genre.

Good stuff

There were a few plot holes, though. A couple times where the MC thought about having done things that did not seem in keeping with her stated history and character. Not terrible flaws, but they were moments that could have been done better.

I would be interested in a sequel.

Great read!

I really liked this book and can’t wait for the next one to come out. It was a wild magical ride with many endearing characters, lots of betrayal but also friendship and hope.
