Little fox, Lucy, gets a new red wagon and wants to play, but her mom needs her to go to the market first. On her way to the market with her red wagon, she imagines all sorts of amazing things happening. The words in the story describe perfectly normal events but the pictures show a wild adventure. This book could help teach preschool children about disparities in words and pictures - could be a good lesson in how things are not always as they seem. Could even teach older kids about being wary about what they see on the internet. ( )

Renata Liwska presents her own book with creativity that children have even if they are doing something they might not want to do. This book shows that children make the best out of any given moment.

This is a story about a wonderful adventure the young fox takes with his new red wagon, his mom asked him to go to some chores even though this sounded like a boring task he made it a fun adventure. This is a good story to show kids how to be creative and make even boring things fun with creativity. I would use this book for early young readers since it is such a simple read. ( )

It is a very cute story about her red wagon, and what I loved most about it was how towards the end, it wasn't just a red wagon to the little fox. It was a train, a rocket, a car...anything she wanted it to be!

Renata Liwska, the talented Polish-born illustrator who created the lovely artwork for Deborah Underwood's The Quiet Book, The Loud Book! and The Christmas Quiet Book, takes up the role of author as well in this sweet picture-book, which follows the story of Lucy, a little fox who wants nothing more than to play with her new red wagon. When her mother dispatches her to the market to fetch some vegetables, Lucy is unhappy at first, seeing this as a chore. But soon her friends join her on the way, and they become involved in all manner of imaginative games - pretending they are sailing on a ship, or performing in a circus - transforming what could have been a simple task into a journey of discovery and play.

Using the same style that she did in the Underwood books - the artwork is done in pencil, and then colored digitally - Liwska creates the same sort of appealing animals characters here, from the charming Lucy, with her expressive face and adorable little pink bow, to her many fun-loving friends. I enjoyed the illustrations in The Red Wagon immensely, which was to be expected, given my fondness for Liwska's work elsewhere, but I also really appreciated the storytelling, with its delightful tribute to the power of the imagination, which can transform ordinary humdrum tasks into opportunities for fun and make-believe. Specifically, I appreciated the interplay between text and image, as the artwork expands upon the simple text, telling more of the story than can be conveyed in words alone. Recommended to all young children who enjoys games of make-believe themselves, as well as to fans of Renata Liwska's work. ( )

This story is all about the value of creativity and imagination, and would make an excellent read aloud for young elementary students. Lucy starts out the boring journey pulling her “heavy” wagon uphill. But when she gets joined by friends and they start seeing the world through imagination, the trip suddenly becomes fun (and downhill), instead of a burdensome task. Although the text only states exactly what is actually happening in real life, the colorful illustrations depict Lucy and her friends going on adventures ranging from operating construction machinery to flying in rockets. The pencil drawings (with color added digitally) are adorable and so lifelike that I almost felt as if I could pet the fuzzy animal characters. This book will be much appreciated by young readers.

Red Wagon shows how a seemingly boring chore is an opportunity to use one's imagination. The pictures have many interesting things going on, and are presented in a way that clearly show the inventiveness of Lucy and her friends as they go to market. It would be better for a small group or one-on-one read-aloud, as there are many details in the pictures that might be lost on a larger group (and the text doesn't tell the whole story).

This story is about a little fox that had gotten a new little red wagon. She wants to play with it but her mother had asked her to go to the market to get things for her. So she does and she has a little adventure with along the way. This book would be good for older toddlers as they began to start their own adventures. ( )

This book is very entertaining and would be a great read for children. The art is amazing and just seems very soft, the author is also the illustrator and these pictures comes from the sketches from her sketch book.

Red Wagon is the story of Lucy, who just wants to play with her wagon. Lucy’s mother asks her to go to the market to get vegetables. On the way, Lucy has many imaginative adventures with her wagon. Again, I believe the strength in this book is the way the story and illustrations work together. Most of the story is contained within the illustrations, not the text. For example, the text states that the wagon hits a rock, yet the illustration shows the wagon turning into a rocket ship. The text contains the literal story, while the illustrations contain the story in Lucy’s imagination. The strength of this book is how the two elements work together. ( )

This book is about a fox who gets a new wagon. She really wants to play with it but her mom sends her to the store with it. She has an adventure on the way there. When she gets home from the market she is too tired to play with her wagon.

I love the pictures in this book, they are very eye catching. On Lucy's trip to the market she encounters different challenges and is imagining all the ways that she would get to and from. She is in a rocket, a boat and other items that help her get through the rain and over rocks. Very cute book for kids in using their imagination.

Summary:
Lucy gets a brand new red wagon that she wanted to play with immediately. She asks her mother if she can play with her red wagon and her mother sets her off to the market to get some vegetables. Lucy didn't want to go at first because it sounded more like a chore and not any fun. On the way to and from the market Lucy and her friends run into small challenges. By using the red wagon and their imagination they turn the chore into an adventure and make the best out of it.

Personal Reaction:
It shows how kids can turn a boring chore into a world of adventure making it fun. It also shows responsibility and dependency in Lucy helping her mother. Her mother trusts her enough to go to the market place alone to get what they need for dinner. The pictures are very good in showing what Lucy and her friends are imagining while on there adventure.

Classroom Extension Ideas:
1.) Ask each student to write or tell how they turned a boring chore into something fun.
2.) Ask them to draw the little red wagon using their own imagination how they would use the wagon and what places it will take them. ( )

Teaches kids to find fun in the things that seem mundane is important. With an imagination anything is possible. As a teacher I want to help preserve a child's imagination for as long as possible. I think books like these celebrate what an imagination can do and the places it can take you.

Lucy has a new red wagon. She wants to play with it, but her mother wants her to use it to pick up some groceries for her. Lucy uses her imagination to ride the enormous waves of an ocean during a storm, drive a covered wagon, be the engineer on a train, and ride on a rocketship using her wagon.

“Lucy quickly pushed the wagon down the hill. (Illustration shows Lucy and her friends riding the ocean waves during a big storm)
By the time she got to the bottom, it was really coming down!” (Illustration shows the ocean waves are very big.) ( )
